Where I live

Gedgrave is situated on the east coast of Suffolk about 1 mile outside Orford.

Our house is 50 feet above sea level and overlooks the North Sea.  The grassland is sandy so we can be slightly challenged for grass in the height of the summer.  We are also open to the easterly blast from the North Sea in winter, but I wouldn’t be anywhere else – it is heaven!

Gedgrave is just outside Orford, a really delightful village, in an ‘Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’.  Orford has retained almost all of its historic charm, despite its failing fortunes over the centuries.

In the distance, we can see Orford Castle, a strangely fascinating castle keep set amongst its former defence mounds, an historic landmark for ships using the waters off the Suffolk coast.

Orford also has a beautiful church, originally built in the 12th Century; a series of ruined chancel arcades is all that remains today of the old church.  However, the ‘new’ church has been much restored in recent years and is well worth viewing.

There are also some fantastic walks along the River Ore – the birdlife is amazing.  We also have some great places to eat – the Crown & Castle Hotel and the Butley Orford Oysterage to name a couple.  You can also take a relaxing river trip for lunch on the Lady Florence.

I haven’t even mentioned Orford Ness and Lighthouse, or Havergate Island bird sanctuary – we are so lucky to live in such an amazing place!
